What personal data we collect and why we collect it

As users leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comment form, as well as the IP address of the visitor and the list of browser user agents to help detect spam.

To see if you are using it, an anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service. Privacy policy for the Gravatar service is available here: After your comment has been approved, your profile picture in the context of your comment is visible to the public.

When uploading images to the website, you should avoid uploading images which include embedded location data (EXIF GPS). Website visitors can download and extract any location data from website images.

If you leave a comment on our site, you may opt-in to use cookies to save your name, email address and website. These are for your convenience, so that when you make another message, you do not have to fill in your information again. Such cookies last a year.

When you visit our login page we must set a temporary cookie to decide if cookies are approved by your browser. This cookie does not contain any personal data and will be discarded after closing your browser.

When you log in, we’ll also set up several cookies to store your login information and choices on your screen. Login cookies last two days, and cookies with screen options last a year.

This cookie includes no personal data and simply indicates the post ID of the article you just edited. It expires after 1 day.

Embedded content from other websites

Documents on this site can contain embedded content (for example, videos, photos, documents, etc.). Embedded content from other websites acts as if the visitor had visited the other website in exactly the same way.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking and monitor your interaction with the embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged into that website.

How long we retain your data

If you leave a comment, it preserves the comment and its metadata forever. It is so that we can immediately identify and accept any follow-up comments, instead of keeping them in a queue of moderation.

For users who register (if any) on our website, we also store the personal data they provide in their user profile. All users can view, edit, or delete their personal data at any time (unless they can change their username). Administrators of websites may also see and edit the content.

What rights you have over your data

If you have an account on this site, or have any comments left, you may request that you receive an exported file of the personal data that we hold about you, including any data that you have received. You can also suggest that we erase any personal data that we keep about you. This does not include any data for financial, legal, or security purposes that we are obliged to keep.

Where we send your data

Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service.
